September Charity of The Month – Jacob’s House

The San Diego Field and Warehouse division lead by Tommy, General Superintendent selected, Jacob‘s House as our September Charity.

When a loved one is in the hospital, the last thing a family should have to worry about is a hotel (or how to pay for it). Jacobs House provides those in need with a place to stay so that they can get some rest during the difficult time.

It was a true privilege to be able to meet with Linda Mejia, Executive Director at Jacob’s House as well as Jennifer Duregger, Jacob’s older sister during our visit.

As Linda took us on a tour of Jacob’s House, we could tell this organization really put a lot of time, effort, and love into planning the “home away from home” that families need when faced with unexpected crisis of a family member in the hospital.  Each room of the house is an oasis for families to go during their time of need to unwind, relax, and gather their thoughts. Most families that stay at Jacob’s House, have little to no time to pack personal belongings and race out the door to the hospital where they loved one is. The families who arrive at Jacob’s House are comforted by a large family style kitchen full of food, that is donated by local businesses and families as well as basic needs like toiletries already at the house. There is a small sanctuary on the property, that allows families a place to worship and pray for their loved ones who are in the hospital.“Four years after my son Adam’s death, my first grandchild was fighting for her life with heart decease. Julia died at 3.5 months of age. Between Adam and Julia, I spent many days, weeks, and months living at various hospital hospitality houses. These experiences taught me about the need, the gift, and the value of such facilities for my family and my daughter’s family.” – Linda Mejia

Jacob‘s House Mission Statement

Crisis can strike a family at any time, without warning. Suddenly, the only prayer is for God to reach down and save the life of that loved one. It’s the only thing that matters.
But where do families find a place of refuge in the middle of such a traumatic life changing storm? It is the vision of Jacob‘s House to be a place of comfort and a place of hope to help families survive and overcome life’s challenges.
While we cannot change the destiny, we can impact the journey. No matter what the outcome, Jacob‘s House will be a strong tower for families.
It is our express purpose to build Jacob‘s House adjacent to a local hospital in the Temecula Valley Region. Further, we envision that Jacob‘s House will cooperatively function to support all local hospitals but will also partner with Hospice of the Valleys to impact even more families in need..
In December, 2012, Jacob‘s House acquired a house near the Temecula Valley Hospital. We opened this facility when the hospital opened in Fall 2013.

How Jacob‘s House Supports Others

  • Jacob‘s House provides a place to stay, a place to eat, a place to shower, and a stay to sleep when a loved one has been admitted into the hospital.
  • Their welcoming staff and volunteers are sympathetic to those facing a crisis and help with specific family needs.
  • Jacob‘s House helps address the financial, spiritual, geographical, and time-sensitive needs that people in crisis require when their loved one is in the hospital.
